The third-generation Apple TV 4K, which launched earlier this month, features a binned version of the A15 Bionic chip that has one CPU core disabled, it is now reported.
The website FlatpanelsHD reported now that the A15 Bionic in the new Apple TV comes with a five-core CPU. Despite the stashed CPU and fanless design, the new Apple TV is about 40% faster and throttles less than the previous Apple TV 4K with the A12 Bionic chip, according to the website. According to the report, the new Apple TV is much faster than consoles like the Xbox One. But the PS5 still has the edge in multi-core benchmarks. While the report is unconfirmed, it is suspected that the Apple TV uses a version of the A15 Bionic with a four-core GPU, compared to a five-core GPU in the iPhone 13 Pro models.
Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen. is not a console killer
Apple's streaming box still lags behind mainstream consoles in terms of graphics performance, but the report says it's "gradually getting to the point where Xbox One and PS4 games should theoretically be playable on the Apple TV without too many compromises." According to Apple, GPU performance on the new Apple TV is up to 30% faster than the previous generation. The review pointed out that the Apple TV only offers a limited number of games that take full advantage of the A15 Bionic's capabilities, so the device is far from being a "console killer."
