Apple's Studio Display apparently has 64GB of internal storage. But only 2GB is actually used by the display, as one developer discovered.
As the developer “Khaos Tian” on Twitter reported, the Studio Display only uses 2GB of its 64GB internal NAND storage. Some free space is likely needed for firmware updates, but the 62GB of unused space is apparently useless at this point. Apple has not confirmed the size of the Studio Display's internal storage in the specs. The discovery may not be surprising considering the Studio Display includes an A13 Bionic chip.
Production costs could be the answer
The A13 Bionic was introduced with the iPhone 11 in 2019 before being used in the second-generation iPhone SE and the ninth-generation iPad. None of those devices were ever available in storage configurations below 64GB, which could indicate that smaller amounts of NAND memory are incompatible with the A13's memory controller. Economies of scale may also be to blame. The production costs of combining the A13 with a smaller amount of storage could be higher than the cost of the same 64GB system currently used in the iPhone 11 and the ninth-generation iPad, which is still on sale.
Apple Studio Display runs full version of iOS
Overall, that means the Studio Display packs exactly the same 2.65GHz A13 Bionic chip, 12MP ultra-wide front-facing camera with Center Stage, and 64GB base configuration of storage as the ninth-generation iPad. Plus, it's now clear that the Studio Display has better specs than the second-generation Apple TV 4K, which comes with an A12 Bionic chip and base storage of just 32GB. Last week, it was revealed that the Studio Display runs the full version of iOS 15.4, exactly the same version as the iPhone and iPad, meaning updates to the display's features will arrive as part of iOS updates.
