This evening, Apple released iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7 and tvOS 14 for all users. Below you will find a summary of the most important new features.
The new Apple Watch operating system contains new tools that allow developers to create more advanced types of complications. In addition, users are given the freedom to store multiple complications from one app on a watch face. Of course, the areas of health and fitness will also benefit under watchOS 7. The Workouts app was equipped with new dance workouts and improved calorie counting as part of the update. The Activities application was redesigned and renamed "Fitness". But a particularly cool feature is the sharing of watch faces. This means that users will be able to exchange their personalized watch faces with friends in the future. Developers can also add ready-made watch faces to their watch apps. But that's not all. Users can now also save watch faces from the web and use them as they wish. There will also be a function for monitoring hand-washing behavior - read more here.
watchOS 7: Sleep monitoring
But the big highlight is the new sleep monitoring. It has been reported for years, there have been leaks and countless rumors. Now the time has finally come. With watchOS 7, the Apple Watch finally gets native sleep monitoring. However, this should work in conjunction with iOS 14. The aim of the function is to ensure that users get the best possible sleep. The Apple Watch should be able to help users fall asleep. For example, alarms are set and the "Do Not Disturb" function is activated. As soon as sleep mode is activated, the smartwatch's display remains switched off. The wearer is then woken up either by an alarm tone or by haptic feedback from the watch. The sleep analysis is then provided in the Health app. Users can evaluate the data in this app - similar to the ECG feature. The new operating system is available for all Apple Watch models from Series 3 onwards. The list of new features in tvOS 14 is particularly interesting.
tvOS 14 at a glance
Last year, the Apple TV received a new Control Center with tvOS 13, support for multiple users with the Up Next function, integrated support for Xbox One and Playstation DualShock 4 joysticks, and new underwater screensavers. This year, Apple is bringing the Home app to the Apple TV with tvOS 14. Users also receive a picture-in-picture notification when people approach their house. The prerequisite for this is the use of a HomeKit-enabled surveillance camera. In addition, support for multiple users has been expanded and can now be used specifically for Apple Arcade games. This allows users to access their personal game status directly and easily. Part of tvOS 14 is also expanded support for the Xbox controller. In addition to the features mentioned above, there will also be the audio sharing option, known from iOS 13. The new Apple TV operating system is now available to all users.
