It was already announced at the weekend thanks to a document leak. Apple has now released the ninth iPhone update under iOS 13 just before Christmas.
Accordingly, iOS 13.3, iPadOS 13.3, watchOS 6.1.1, tvOS 13.3 and macOS Catalina 10.15.2 are now available for download for all users. The iPhone operating system does receive a few new features in iOS 13.3, but overall the focus is on various bug fixes and improvements in the areas of stability and performance.
Do you want to have more control over your child? – Apple makes it possible!
One of the new features is the extension of screen time. Parents can now control who their child can communicate with and when. The option is called "Communication Limit" and can be selected in the iOS settings in the Screen Time section. The function includes "Phone", "Facetime" and "Messages" as well as iCloud contacts.
Do you like Memoji stickers?
In addition to the addition, a long-awaited feature has been added. This allows the user to switch off the "Memoji stickers" in the keyboard area - to the left of the classic emojis. To do this, open the iOS settings and navigate to the "General" area. Now open the "Keyboard" menu item further down and scroll all the way down. Here you will find the switch to deactivate the Memoji stickers.
Cosmetic change
Hardly worth mentioning but interesting for those who love details. With iOS 13.3, the Apple Watch app receives an almost invisible change to the app icon. Apple has changed the color of the crown from black to gray.
Support for FIDO2 – A great feature
In iOS 13.3, Apple has finally integrated support for FIDO2. iPhone and iPad devices are of course compatible. This means that NFC, USB and Lightning FIDO2-compatible security keys can now be used. This is what Apple's documentation says:
iOS 13.3 now supports NFC, USB, and Lightning FIDO2 compliant security keys in Safari, SFSafariViewController, and ASWebAuthenticationSession using the WebAuthn standard on devices with the required hardware capabilities.
There are now plenty of such security keys. However, not all of them are compatible with an iPhone and iPad as well as a MacBook at the same time. At this point I would like to highlight the product from Yubico. The security key has a USB-C and a Lightning connector. This means that this security key is compatible with an iPhone, iPad and of course a Mac. The product is called Yubico Yubikey 5Ci and can be purchased for around 69 euros from Amazon. The Apple Watch update only contains minor changes. You can read the update description of iOS 13.3 verbatim below. (Photo by artursz / Bigstockphoto)
