Apple is improving Apple Pay's fraud prevention features for cards stored in the Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, but initially only for Visa cards.
The company began informing wallet users on Tuesday. Twitter A new pop-up window was introduced when the Wallet app was opened. The message states:
When you attempt to make an online or in-app transaction, your device evaluates information about your Apple ID, device, and location (if you have location services enabled) to create fraud prevention scores that Apple uses to detect and prevent fraud.
Apple Wallet: What about MasterCard or American Express cards?
Additionally, Apple says it will share "fraud prevention ratings and information about your transaction" with card networks to further prevent fraud. This includes purchase amount, currency and date. There doesn't appear to be a way to disable the fraud protection features, with Apple noting that users who want to prevent ratings from being shared with card networks will need to "select a different card." Users will notice the fraud protection alert as well as the features for the card sets stored in their Wallet. Additionally, Apple will warn users when they add supported cards to Wallet for the first time. The features appear to be rolling out to Visa users around the world. MasterCard or American Express cards appear to be unaffected so far. (Photo by ibphoto / Bigstockphoto)
