According to a new patent, Apple is working on dual biometric authentication – as a result, future devices could be equipped with Face ID and Touch ID.
The Patently Apple portal reports on a newly discovered Apple patent. This deals with Apple's well-known fingerprint sensor and the TrueDepth camera. The patent shows many of the already known applications of Face ID. Nevertheless, Apple notes in the description that Touch ID could serve as a replacement. If, for example, recognition by Face ID were not successful, the fingerprint sensor could step in.
The method is not new
The smartphone manufacturer Huawei has already implemented this type of authentication in its Huawei Mate 20 Pro. The device can be unlocked using facial recognition or fingerprint. The fingerprint sensor is built directly into the display. Of course, the recognition systems of Android devices are not as secure as Apple's own - but the implementation of two types of authentication would still be interesting. Patents and rumors from the past have already shown that Apple has also been working on a fingerprint sensor in the display. In general, patents should be treated with caution. It is not uncommon for many such ideas to never make it into finished products.
