According to a new patent, Apple is continuing to work on the biometric authentication Touch ID – the technology could enable Touch ID across the entire display.
New patents keep cropping up, according to which Apple is working on different methods of biometric authentication. In the autumn, for example, a patent was announced, according to which Apple is working on voice recognition – Voice IDAnother patent describes an iPhone with Face ID and Touch ID together. Two biometric authentication methods in one device would therefore also be conceivable and not new.
Innovative and space-saving
In its current patent, Apple describes a form of Touch ID that, thanks to a new methodology, covers the entire display and still saves space. The technology is not entirely unknown - it is based on sound waves, but Apple could still market it as innovative. Acoustic transducers are installed on the edge of the screen and can identify a user's tap and convert it into a fingerprint with the help of suitable sensors. This means that the device in question could be unlocked, no matter where the user taps. Such technology could also make unlocking the Apple Watch much easier, for example. In general, patents should be treated with caution. It is not uncommon for many such ideas to never make it into finished products.
