A patent application from Apple granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office shows how the iPhone could warn against telephone fraud in the future.
Apple wants to better protect iPhone users from telephone fraudsters in the future. According to the latest patent, the iGroup is researching a technology that can detect call ID spoofing. The iPhone should thus warn about fake calls - even before the user accepts the call.
What is call ID spoofing?
The term call ID spoofing describes a prohibited method that allows calls to be made from a fake number. This gives fraudsters the opportunity to pose as employees of a government agency, an electricity provider or similar, for example, and to give their fraud a legitimate face. To detect such fake calls, the iPhone could use various parameters to analyze the displayed phone number and the SIP network protocol and thus check the incoming call for authenticity. The iPhone would then display a warning if it was actually an attempted fraud. Such a spam filter would not prevent such calls, but users would be warned before answering.
