A patent application from Apple granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office shows how the iPhone could be unlocked with one's own voice in the future.
The first biometric recognition method in an iPhone was Touch ID. Apple introduced the popular fingerprint scanner for the first time in 2013. Four years later, Apple introduced Face ID. The new form of authentication quickly established itself and even proved to be more secure. It has now become known that Apple is working on alternative methods of unlocking devices. Theoretically, any Siri-compatible device could process the voice print. In addition, no specific voice command would be necessary for authentication, as every person has individual speaking characteristics.
Voice ID not for full access
The patent description also states that Apple does not want to offer full access to the respective device with the voiceprint. The user would only be able to use certain features. This would mean that Voice ID would only allow limited access to the device. Apple's facial recognition system Face ID would therefore still be available. It remains to be seen whether Voice ID will be ready for the market.
