Apple today announced a new repair program for second and third generation Apple Watch models. It deals with cracks in the display itself.
In the announcement, Apple emphasizes that there are very few models affected by this error. The problem can only occur with aluminum models of the second and third generation of Apple Watch. If a device is affected, cracks form along the rounded edge of the screen - over time, these extend completely around the display. The cause of the defect was not commented on in more detail. Customers with an affected Apple Watch model can have their smartwatch repaired directly by Apple or by an authorized service partner - the exchange can take up to five days. During the repair, only the display is replaced and not the entire watch. Only the aluminum models of the Apple Watch Series 2 and 3 are eligible for the repair program. The specific devices are listed as follows:
- Apple Watch Series 2 – (38mm and 42mm Space Gray, Gold, Rose Gold and Silver Aluminum) – September 2016 – September 2017
- Apple Watch Nike+ Series 2 – (38mm and 42mm Space Gray and Silver Aluminum) – October 2016 – October 2017
- Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) & Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS+ Cellular) – (38mm and 42mm Space Gray, Gold and Silver Aluminum) – September 2017 – September 2019
- Apple Watch Nike+ Series 3 (GPS) & Apple Watch Nike+ Series 3 (GPS+ Cellular) – (38mm and 42mm Space Gray and Silver Aluminum October) – 2017 – September 2019
According to Apple, the above models are eligible for a free exchange for up to three years after purchase – the full support document can be found here. (Photo by Denys Prykhodov / Bigstockphoto)
