Apple has introduced a new app for Mac users working with immersive video. The app is called Apple Immersive Video Utility and is now available for free in the App Store. It's primarily aimed at producers, but anyone can download it. The app works in conjunction with Apple Vision Pro and allows you to manage, edit, and broadcast 3D video content in the highest quality.
With Vision Pro, Apple aims to redefine spatial video and immersive entertainment. The new app expands this concept with a professional solution for editing and managing content. Apple Immersive Videos aren't just conventional clips – they're shot in 8K, utilize a 180-degree field of view, and feature spatial audio. The app provides all the tools you need to organize such content on your Mac and bring it to your Vision Pro.
What exactly are Apple Immersive Videos?
Apple Immersive Videos are specially produced 3D videos designed for spatial vision and hearing. You get a 180-degree field of view and spatial audio, which means the sound changes with your head movement. Currently, content such as concert recordings from The Weeknd and Metallica is available in this format. Series such as Prehistoric Planet Immersive and Wild Life are also available.
What can the Apple Immersive Video Utility app do?
The app offers a complete workspace for immersive video files on your Mac. You can:
- Import immersive video files
- Organize and sort content
- Create playlists
- Review and package videos
- Scan and edit metadata
- Adjust files for export
- Stream videos to one or more Vision Pro devices
If you're using multiple devices at the same time, you can start synchronized playback. This is especially useful for presentations or group viewings.
Use with Apple Vision Pro
Once you've prepared your content in the app, you can connect your Vision Pro devices and play the videos directly on them. The app detects multiple devices simultaneously and controls playback centrally. Streaming takes place over the local network.
Metadata and post-production
An important feature is metadata editing. You can view and edit both static and dynamic metadata. This is especially relevant in post-production when you want to adapt content for other users or formats. The app also allows you to replace individual components in the video package.
System requirements and availability
Apple Immersive Video Utility is available for free on the App Store, but is currently only available in US English. The app only runs on Macs with an M1 chip or later and requires macOS Sequoia. A version for visionOS is also available, allowing you to work seamlessly between your Mac and Vision Pro.
Target group
While the app is primarily intended for content producers, you can also download it as a user if you want to manage or experience your own content. It is not currently tied to a developer account or special permissions (to the App Store).
Apple brings structure to the world of immersive videos
With the Immersive Video Utility, Apple is adding a practical tool for immersive content to its Vision Pro ecosystem. Whether you work with spatial video or simply want to enjoy it, this app provides all the features you need. It's free but requires current Apple hardware and software. For users and producers, this is a step toward professional immersion. (Image: Apple)
