Apple is significantly expanding language support for Apple Intelligence. With iOS 18.4, which will be released in April, ten new languages will be integrated into the AI system for the first time. Previously, use was limited to US English, but that is now changing. This means that significantly more people can use the intelligent functions of Apple Intelligence in their own language. The update is a significant step for Apple because it makes AI technology more accessible and easier to use for millions of users around the world. You can find out which new languages are being added and what this means for Siri here.
Apple Intelligence was introduced in October and was initially limited to US English. Later, iOS 18.2 added several variants of English, including British, Canadian and Australian English. iOS 18.4 is now the first major language expansion for non-English users. The following ten languages are newly supported with the update:
- French
- German
- Italian
- Portuguese (Brazil)
- Spanish
- Japanese
- Korean
- Chinese (simplified)
- English (Singapore)
- English (India)
This means that Apple Intelligence is now available to significantly more people. The expansion is likely to play a major role, particularly in markets such as Germany, France and Japan, as many users have previously had to resort to alternatives or have only been able to use the AI to a limited extent.
What changes with the new languages?
The expansion of language support brings several advantages. Apple Intelligence can now work in the new languages:
- Deliver better Siri answers: Siri will be able to give more precise answers in these languages
- Understand and generate texts better: Autocorrect, text recognition and smart replies benefit from this
- Making apps smarter: Functions such as automatic message summarization or suggestions in the Mail app now also work in the new languages
The language adaptation is particularly noticeable with Siri. Until now, Apple has had difficulty getting Siri to an intelligent level outside of the English-speaking world. The AI integration with Apple Intelligence could now change that.
Siri improvements only come with iOS 18.5
Anyone who was also looking forward to major Siri updates will have to wait a little longer. Many people had actually expected Apple to bring new Siri functions with iOS 18.4. However, according to the current press release, these changes will not be released until iOS 18.5. Apple announced that Apple Intelligence "will be expanded with new features in the coming months, including more options for Siri." This means that users will only be able to fully enjoy the improved voice assistant with a later update.
Apple Intelligence goes international – iOS 18.4 brings AI into new languages
With iOS 18.4, Apple is taking an important step and bringing Apple Intelligence to the iPhone in ten additional languages. This is a significant innovation, especially for users in countries such as Germany, France or Japan, as they can now finally use all AI functions in their language. The expected Siri improvements will only come with iOS 18.5, but the current update already ensures that the AI is more widely available. Anyone who has been put off by the English language restriction can look forward to April, when iOS 18.4 is rolled out. Time for fresh accessories?
