Apple Intelligence is at the heart of a new era of technology that could revolutionize the way iPhones and iPads are used. Morgan Stanley analysts have recognized that this innovation could not only increase sales but also speed up upgrade cycles for these devices.
Apple Intelligence not only promises to make our devices smarter, but it is also driving sales of iPhones and iPads. Analysts at Morgan Stanley have identified Apple Intelligence as a key driver of sales and expect this technology to lead to a significant upgrade cycle. Let's take a closer look at why this development is so crucial and what future prospects it opens up for Apple.
Apple Intelligence: A Catalyst for Sales
Apple Intelligence has the potential to fundamentally change the way smartphones are used. However, this technology requires newer devices, which is something that analysts at Morgan Stanley see as very positive. In a note to investors obtained by AppleInsider viewed Morgan Stanley raised its price target for Apple shares from $216 to $273 as the prospect of Apple Intelligence could boost device sales.
A multi-year product upgrade cycle
Apple Intelligence calls it a "clear catalyst for a multi-year product upgrade cycle." This is partly due to limited backward compatibility. Morgan Stanley admits they previously underestimated how important the upgrade cycle could be. A new analysis suggests Apple could ship nearly half a billion iPhones in the next two years, up 6% from the record 2021/2022 year. At the same time, an average annual increase in selling price of 5% is expected, which could lead to total revenue of $485 billion and earnings per share of $8.70 for fiscal year 2026.
The Importance of the Upgrade Cycle
Morgan Stanley explains that a major upgrade cycle is coming, driven by the huge install base of about 1.3 billion devices and extended replacement cycles to 4.8 years. This new technology will initially only be offered to a small group of users, namely about 8% of iPhone and iPad users. To use Apple Intelligence, users will have to upgrade to an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. This should benefit Apple as it will lead to a positive shift in the mix and growth in the average selling price.
Impact on iPads and the Chinese market
On the iPad side, only 24% of the devices currently run Apple Intelligence, implying a "mini upgrade cycle." This could shorten iPad replacement cycles to 3.8 years, the pre-COVID average. Apple Intelligence could also help boost Apple's success in China, as a new intelligent software layer can potentially spur "strong upgrades," assuming Apple can quickly find a partner in China.
Apple Intelligence: Key to the Next Generation of Mobile Devices
Apple Intelligence represents a significant technological innovation and could be a key driver for iPhone and iPad sales. Morgan Stanley analysts see great potential in this development, which is reflected in the increase in the price target for Apple shares. For users, this means that exciting new devices and features can be expected in the coming years.
