It's a shock for many fans. Apple has officially announced that AirPower will not be released.
In a statement by Dan Riccio, Apple apologized to all customers who have been waiting for AirPower. The Qi charging mat was originally announced in September 2017 along with the iPhone X. Apple remained silent about the project for a year and a half and today confirmed that AirPower will not be released.
AirPower was supposed to enable charging of iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time. Tech Crunch has now announced, without explanation, that the project has been canceled. According to an insider, the delay was explained in mid-September 2018. According to him, Apple had two problems with the charging mat. The first major problem was the overheating of Apple's Qi charging mat.
This was said to have been so strong that even the connection between the device and the charging station was disrupted. Another problem lay in the arrangement, because the installed power coils were to be divided into three equal groups. Each of the coils was a different size. Due to a lack of space, this is said to have led to overlaps, which, among other things, caused this severe overheating.
"After much effort, we have concluded that AirPower will not meet our high standards. We apologize to customers who were looking forward to the launch of the charging mat. We remain convinced that the future is wireless and are committed to advancing the wireless charging experience," said Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, in an email.
