The CarKey feature is intended to turn an iPhone or an Apple Watch into a digital car key. That much is already known. Now there are images that show Apple CarKey within the Wallet app.
The CarKey function should make it possible to store digital car keys in the Wallet app. Users can use them to lock and unlock a car and start the engine. Authentication via Face ID or Touch ID is necessary to initiate the process - but there is also an express mode. Basically, the functionality is the same as Apple Pay. If desired, such keys can be shared temporarily or permanently with friends or family members via iMessage. It was recently revealed that BMW Apple's first partner in this area. This means that the Apple CarKey feature could make its debut at the Bavarian car manufacturer. In keeping with this, images have now been published on Twitter showing the digital key in the Wallet app.
Three access levels are available
The images basically visualize previous revelations. The digital key is shown in the form of a card with a BMW i8 model on it. Tapping on it opens a smart menu with the most important information. From there, other people can be invited to use the respective vehicle. One of three access levels can be selected. The options are: open the trunk, unlock the vehicle or unlock the vehicle and drive. At this point, however, I would like to point out that the authenticity of the screenshots cannot be proven. Errors in spelling and presentation could be interpreted as an indication of a "fake". Alternatively, it could also be an early test version, as such errors are not uncommon. The feature was first introduced in an earlier iOS 13.4 Beta revealed. Further discoveries were made in a leaked iOS 14 version. When Apple will officially announce the feature is not known. But this year's WWDC 2020 should be a suitable date for it.
