In the digital world where security is often a priority, Apple has once again proven that its commitment to protecting users and developers on the App Store platform is unmatched. Below, we highlight Apple's recent efforts to block fraudulent activity and ensure safety for all users.
As the digital landscape becomes increasingly complex, Apple has stepped up its efforts to combat fraud on the App Store. From 2020 to 2023, the company has blocked an impressive $7 billion in potential fraud attempts, demonstrating the reliability and security of its platform underlines.
Comprehensive fraud prevention
Apple's ongoing PR offensive aims to establish the App Store as the safest place to buy and install iPhone apps. This comes at a time when the company has been forced by antitrust lawsuits to open up its platform to more competition. Despite these challenges, Apple has said it has successfully blocked more than $7 billion worth of fraud attempts between 2020 and 2023.
New challenges and adjustments
The demands on Apple have increased in both the US and Europe. In the US, a court ruling now allows developers to direct users to external websites to make subscriptions and in-app purchases. Although Apple charges a 27% commission on such sales, this does not seem to affect legal decisions. In Europe, Apple must now also allow third-party app stores, a change that is viewed as controversial by many and whose legality is currently under review.
Statistics and measures against fraud
According to Apple's latest annual anti-fraud analysis, the company rejected over 1.7 million app submissions in 2023 because these apps did not meet the App Store's strict privacy, security, and content standards. In addition, nearly 374 million developer and customer accounts were terminated and nearly 152 million ratings and reviews were removed to combat fraud.
Apple: Refining surveillance techniques
Apple has also improved its ability to prevent the creation of fraudulent developer accounts in the first place. The company employs a team of about 500 people who review an average of 132,500 apps per week. That equates to about 50 apps per day per employee.
Advanced Fraud Detection
To prevent card fraud, Apple uses a combination of human supervision and automated controls. When using Apple Pay, special fraud protection features are also activated that allow key information such as Apple ID, device, and location to be evaluated in order to detect and block fraudulent activity.
App Store Security: Progress and Responsibility at Apple
Apple continues its efforts to establish the App Store as a safe and trustworthy platform. By implementing advanced technologies and constantly adapting to new legal frameworks, the company shows that it is able to protect and support the needs of both developers and end users.
