The AirPods Pro have been very popular since their launch in October 2019. But not every user seems to be satisfied. Reports that the noise cancellation does not always work or that unpleasant noises can be heard have increased in recent months. Now Apple is addressing both problems.
Apple released a new update for the AirPods Pro – firmware version 2D15. In the course of this, two new support documents were published that relate to problems with noise cancellation and the reported noise interference. With regard to the noise cancellation of the AirPods Pro, Apple explains that contamination of the grille on the top of the plugs can lead to a loss of bass sound and thus increase background noise (e.g. street or aircraft noise). In the document Apple suggests the following troubleshooting steps:
- Make sure your connected iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac has the latest software installed.
- Put both AirPods Pro in your ears and check that active noise cancellation is enabled.
- Clean the grille on the top of your AirPods Pro. Sometimes Active Noise Cancellation can be affected if debris or earwax accumulates in the area shown below.
- If active noise cancellation still does not work as expected, contact the Apple Support.

AirPods Pro and noise
The second support document deals with the issue of noise. While some users notice an unpleasant crackling sound, other AirPods Pro users describe it as more of a static noise. In both cases, Apple suggests checking the software on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac and running some tests. Instructions provides for the following:
- Make sure you have the latest software on your connected iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.
- Make sure your connected device is nearby and there are no radio interference or obstructions between you and your device.
- Listen to audio from another app to determine if the app is causing the problem.
- If you continue to have problems with sound quality – or if the problems increase in noisy environments, while exercising or making phone calls – contact the Apple Support.
While Apple is trying to remedy the situation with new tips, the fan community is discussing the usefulness of the firmware updates 2D15. The feedback seems to be very mixed. Some users claim to have noticed improvements in noise cancellation, while others have noticed no change. However, there are also reports that users believe that the new update has made the noise cancellation of the AirPods Pro worse. Therefore, each individual user should form their own opinion and follow Apple's instructions if necessary. Do you want new headphones?
