Apple has now officially released a firmware update with the identifier 3A283 for the AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro publishedThe new feature – Spatial Audio – is now available for iOS 14 users.
Under iOS 14, the Pro version of the AirPods will have “Spatial Audio” or spatial sound. This feature was introduced during WWDC 2020 in June. For spatial sound, Apple uses dynamic head tracking and the position of the iPhone to create cinema surround sound, a sound experience that makes it feel like you are right in the movie. The gyroscope and accelerometer in the AirPods Pro analyze head movements. The comparison then helps to adjust the sounds and reproduce them in the right direction in the earpiece. The feature is now available under firmware update 3A283. But not everyone can use it. In order to activate the function, iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 is required. Accordingly, only registered developers or public beta testers access it.
AirPods: Automatic switching under iOS 14
As you can see in the screenshot, Spatial Audio can be activated or deactivated in the Control Center. Initial users describe the feature as impressive and called Apple TV+ content immersive. In addition to Spatial Audio, the update also seems to support automatic switching between devices (for AirPods 2 & AirPods Pro). By using multiple Apple devices under one and the same Apple ID, it is now possible to automatically switch the white plugs between devices. This means that if you listen to music on your iPhone but start a movie on your iPad, the AirPods will automatically connect to the iPad. Manual switching is therefore no longer necessary. The same applies from iPad to Apple Watch, etc., because all operating systems (iPadOS, iOS, macOS and watchOS) are taken into account. But here too, iOS 14 & Co. are required.
