Apple released a new firmware version for the AirPods Pro, AirPods Max and some Beats models on Tuesday evening. The update appears to include, among other things, the promised "Find My" function.
The new firmware update, which is available for the AirPods Pro & AirPods Max was provided, includes the "Find My" integration promised by Apple. This is currently only available for the higher-end earbuds. This means that the compatible AirPods models (Pro & Max) get new features in the "Find My" app, such as precise location determination, a new "Find Nearby" user interface, Lost Mode, and the ability to receive notifications when users have left their earbuds somewhere. The new integration now means that the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max have been integrated into the "Find My" network and send out a continuous Bluetooth beacon message. When other Apple devices are nearby, they can detect this signal and forward it to the "Find My" network, so that the device's location is displayed on the owner's map.
With "Find My" integration: Finding AirPods has never been easier
Essentially, it's the same functionality as AirTags over long distances. However, when the AirPods are in close proximity, users can now get a visual indication of their location. However, since Apple's earphones don't have a U1 chip, "Exact Find" isn't available. Thanks to "Lost Mode," users can leave contact information so that a person who finds the audio accessory and wants to pair it will receive a message. The new features are currently only compatible with the AirPods Pro and the Max model. The second generation of the earbuds is left empty-handed. However, it is suspected that the AirPods 3, which are due to be released later this year, will also have "Find My" integration.
