Two of the most important features of the new Apple AirPods Pro 2 will not be available when they ship on Friday, September 23rd.
The press release for the AirPods Pro 2 states in a footnote:
Personalized spatial audio profiles and Find My will be available with iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura in October.
Since Apple requires the AirPods Pro 2 to be paired with an Apple device running the latest operating system, the footnote in the press release suggests that neither feature will work with iOS 16, which officially rolls out on Monday, September 12.
AirPods Pro 2: New features will be added with update
This probably means that AirPods Pro 2 users will have to wait until iOS 16.1 for the two features to be actively available. iOS 16.1 is currently in developer beta, so the first point version of iOS 16 will likely be released alongside the release of iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura in October. With personalized Spatial Audio, users experience sound individually based on the size and shape of their head and ears. With the TrueDepth camera on iPhone, users can create a personal Spatial Audio profile that provides a listening experience tailored to them. The new AirPods Pro 2 feature an updated charging case with a new Find My speaker that can be used to locate them using the Find My app.
AirPods 3: Apple offers new charging case
A small change not mentioned by Apple concerns the AirPods 3. The company not only introduced the second generation AirPods Pro today, but also equipped the third generation AirPods with a Lightning charging case without MagSafe wireless charging. This version of the case can only be charged with a Lightning cable. Buyers can therefore now choose between the two versions. While the AirPods 3 with Lightning case cost 209 euros, buyers have to pay 219 euros for the AirPods 3 with MagSafe charging case. This means that the new option is only worthwhile to a limited extent. However, if you want to do without the MagSafe charging option, you save 10 euros. (Image: Apple)
