It was only a matter of time before the guys from iFixit took a look at the circuit board of the new AirPods 2. Despite a few changes, the specialists were able to find two improvements in the design.
As soon as a new Apple product is released, iFixit takes it apart and puts it through its paces. Nothing has changed on the outside - and there is hardly anything new in terms of functions either. The white earbuds come with the long-awaited wireless charging case, a new H1 chip, longer battery life and Bluetooth 5.0. You can also use the command "Hey Siri" - alternatively, Apple's assistant responds to a double tap.
Opening the AirPods 2 remains problematic
Opening the AirPods 2 is just as difficult as its predecessors, iFixit notes. In order to take a look inside the case, we needed the usual tools, a vice, a razor blade, a heat gun, isopropyl alcohol - to soften the adhesive - and a toothpick. Inside the AirPods 2 and the charging case you'll find the same batteries as in the first generation.
Apple improves sealing
The first difference to the AirPods 1 is a hinge made of metal - this seems more robust and this time it was attached with a much better adhesive. The second improvement is the much better seal. The AirPods 2 should therefore be more resistant to moisture. iFixit concludes that the new housing will achieve increased durability - but the AirPods 2, like their predecessors, get 0 out of 10 possible points in terms of ease of repair.
