With the introduction of the iPhone X in 2017, the notch became an integral part of the iPhone display. The notch contains the TrueDepth camera.
The TrueDepth camera is made up of several sensors. In addition to the normal camera, there is space for an infrared camera, an infrared illuminator, a dot projector, a proximity sensor and speakers. Due to these many components, it is not easy for Apple to reduce the size of the notch in the display. A new technology from the Austrian Apple supplier AMS has now been announced. This gives hope that Apple could reduce the size of the notch in the iPhone.
Compatible with OLED displays
The company announced the development of a new RGB light and infrared proximity sensor in a press release. The sensor could also be used behind an OLED display - the measurement of ambient light and proximity would not be affected. This new sensor technology saves space and could give future iPhones a new look.
AMS' optical sensors have been used in the TrueDepth camera since the iPhone X and can also be found in the iPhone Xs, Xs Max and Xr models. To date, Apple is not officially listed as a customer at AMS - which is normal for Apple. According to Reuters, the Austrian company generates around 45 percent of its revenue from Apple alone.
