In 2014, Apple developed the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the first particularly large iPhones to the delight of many fans. However, a fatal problem quickly became apparent with the iPhone 6 Plus – the 5.5″ device was easy to bend.
The issue became known under the name Bentgate. Now the new iPad Pro 12.9" is said to be suffering from the same problem. Several voices in various forums report that the new 12.9" device can be bent easily. One user writes that he kept his 12.9" iPad Pro in the laptop compartment of his backpack. After a trip, he noticed that the device was slightly bent.
Zack Nelson runs the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything and is known for demonstrating destructive testing of new devices. In his latest video, he took on the 5.9mm thin iPad Pro and inflicted all sorts of damage on it. Towards the end of the video (minute 6:27) he subjected the tablet to a bending test - it broke.
It is difficult to say exactly how much force he actually had to use. He identified the side microphone output and the inductive charging technology for the Apple Pencil 2 as weak points.
It is currently not possible to say for sure whether the new iPad Pro really suffers from a bending problem. Such videos and individual entries in forums should always be viewed with caution. A case for the device and taking out Apple Care are always recommended.
