Apple users can look forward to the next big update this December: iOS 18.2. While iOS 18 and iOS 18.1 have already brought some new features, there are numerous features that are still missing from those versions. However, Apple has promised that these will be released "later this year." Based on the update history so far, it is very likely that iOS 18.2 will bring these long-awaited features.
Apple has already unveiled some features for iOS 18, but many of them have not yet made it into the current versions of iOS 18.0 and iOS 18.1. However, Apple says these features will be released "later this year," suggesting they could arrive with iOS 18.2 in December. This report is based on official Apple announcements and other reports, including from Bloomberg, which indicate that iOS 18.2 will be the last major update for 2024.
- As a reminder: Due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the use of Apple Intelligence is currently blocked on iPhones and iPads in the EU. Apple has therefore imposed a geo-block to comply with the law. Interestingly, however, the feature is already available in the developer beta of macOS Sequoia 15.1 (as long as the language is switched to English), as macOS is not considered a gatekeeper platform. Apple is currently in talks with the European Commission to find a solution that could also enable the use of Apple Intelligence on mobile devices in the EU. If an agreement is reached, the new features could be available sooner than previously expected.
New features in iOS 18.2
ChatGPT support in Siri
One of the biggest innovations that iOS 18.2 brings is the integration of ChatGPT into Siri, as part of Apple Intelligence. Apple CEO Tim Cook has already mentioned that this feature will be available by the end of the year. This will make Siri much more intelligent and able to answer more complex questions, which will improve the overall interaction with the iPhone. This integration makes Siri a real competitor to other intelligent assistants.
extension of Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI system, is being made available to more English-speaking countries in iOS 18.2. Currently only active in the US, but with the new update, users in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK will also be able to access it. Apple Intelligence helps you get smarter, context-based suggestions on your iPhone.
Genmoji and Image Playground
These creative features were originally presented at WWDC 2024, but have not yet been released in previous iOS versions. With iOS 18.2, it will probably be possible to create your own emojis and images on the iPhone, which should especially please users of the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models. The "Genmoji" and "Image Playground" functions make it possible to create personalized emojis and creative image compositions directly on the device.
New hearing health features for AirPods Pro 2
With iOS 18.2, Apple is also bringing new features to improve hearing health for the AirPods Pro 2. These include a new hearing protection mode for noisy environments and a mode called "clinical" hearing aid that supports hearing profiles tailored to the user. This new hearing aid mode is currently being certified by the US FDA and should be available later this year.
Revised Mail app
Apple also plans to fundamentally redesign the Mail app with iOS 18.2. The new design is intended to make it easier to use by allowing emails to be better categorized and sorted. The operation will also be more modern and intuitive, so that you can navigate through your messages more efficiently.
Forced browser selection screen in the EU
Starting with iOS 18.2, Apple will introduce a forced browser selection screen in the EU that will allow users to freely choose the default browser on their iPhone. This change comes in response to new EU regulations. The screen will appear when setting up a new device or after an update. You will also have to review this setting once a year, giving users more control over their preferred apps.
Support for robot vacuum cleaners
Another highlight of the update is support for robot vacuum cleaners in the Home app. You will be able to control the core functions of your robot vacuum cleaner, such as cleaning mode, suction power and charge level, directly from your iPhone. You can also control the robot via Siri, making cleaning your home even easier and more convenient.
Powerful innovations for the iPhone
iOS 18.2 is expected to bring a host of exciting new features that will make iPhone even more powerful and easier to use. With the integration of ChatGPT in Siri, the expansion of Apple Intelligence, and new features for AirPods Pro 2, this update offers valuable improvements for both tech enthusiasts and everyday users. The update is expected to be released in December, so you don't have to wait long to try these features out for yourself. Looking for accessories from top brands?
