Will Apple introduce an iPhone SE successor? This question has been asked frequently in recent years. The answer is - most likely! For some time now, rumors about an iPhone SE 2 have been gaining momentum. We summarize them below.
Some people will now be thinking - how would they know that? There is a simple explanation for this. The well-known and accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has really heated up the rumor mill surrounding an iPhone SE successor. His success rate when it comes to Apple predictions speaks for itself. Good contacts in the supply chain make it possible for him. Be that as it may. In recent weeks he has emphasized several times that Apple will present the iPhone SE successor in early 2020. In addition to the presentation period, he was also given details about functions and features.
iPhone SE – A Success Story
But before we get to the rumors, we would like to take a closer look at the history of the iPhone SE. The small 4-inch smartphone was introduced on March 21, 2016 as part of the spring keynote. The small iPhone appeared in the design of the iPhone 5S and was equipped with the technology of the iPhone 6S. The 3D Touch function was not included, however. So the technology inside the "Special Edition" was up to date, as the iPhone 6S was introduced in September 2015. With this device, Apple fulfilled the wish of 4-inch fans. Not every iPhone user likes the large screens as we know them today. With an entry-level price of around 400 euros for the 16 GB storage version, the small device was guaranteed to be a success. It became more popular than anyone could have imagined.

iPhone SE 2 – The Design
Of course, the question now arises - will the successor model be as compact? If the rumors are to be believed, there will be some changes - whether users will like that remains to be seen. The reports about the design claim that the iPhone SE 2 will appear in the iPhone 8 case. means that the new entry-level device will not have a 4-inch display diagonal but a 4.7-inch one. This increases the dimensions from 123.8 mm x 58.6 mm x 7.6 mm to 138.4 mm x 67.3 mm x 7.3 mm. Is this acceptable for iPhone SE fans? Considering the possible specifications, it might be worth a compromise. According to rumors, there will be space for a camera with a lens on the back.
It is not yet known whether it will have a portrait mode. There are of course also clues regarding the colors. According to Kuo, the device will be available in space gray, silver and red - a red iPhone has been a box office hit so far. So Apple is not planning to reinvent the new entry-level device but to combine popular designs. Whether this will make it more attractive remains to be seen. It will also continue to rely on Touch ID. Yes, there are many who want a Face ID module, but that costs a lot more to produce, which is why the iPhone SE 2 has to do without it.
iPhone SE 2 – The technical data
The next question is: What will the new "little" star look like on the inside? There is already some information on this too. Reports from the supply chain claim that Apple wants to install the A13 chip with a total of 3 GB of RAM. This processor is the latest - known from the iPhone 11 series. A look at the iPhone SE confirms the rumor - this also appeared with the latest chip at the time. Accordingly, buyers of such a device can look forward to many updates due to the performance.
iPhone SE 2 – Will it really be like that be called?
The successor to the iPhone SE is currently called the iPhone SE 2. However, some observers believe that Apple will give the device a new name, as it is allegedly not a direct successor to the "Special Edition". So far, no ideas have been mentioned and Kuo says he has no insight into Apple's marketing department. If you want to google the device, you will only find reports under the name iPhone SE 2. It remains to be seen whether the new name will be leaked in advance. It may not even be decided yet.
iPhone SE 2 – The target group
Which target group does Apple plan to address with this entry-level device? Kuo believes that Apple primarily wants to encourage iPhone 6 users to upgrade with this device. The reason is that the sixth generation of iPhones no longer supports iOS 13. These users therefore also do not have access to Apple's new services Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade. The new entry-level iPhone would therefore be a good opportunity to attract new subscribers.

iPhone SE 2 – price and release date
Finally, we would of course like to answer the questions about prices and release dates. According to the analyst, this device will also be available from 399 US dollars. This version should offer the user around 64 GB of storage space. If that is not enough, you can go for the 128 GB version. This could cost around 479 or 499 US dollars. And when will the device officially debut? According to rumors, Apple plans to present the iPhone in spring 2020. Since Cupertino has made a habit of holding a March event, it can be assumed that the presentation of the alleged iPhone SE 2 will take place during this show.
But please note one important point - none of this has been officially confirmed yet. The summary is based on rumors from sources that have proven to be very reliable in the past. However, this is no guarantee - Apple could change its plans at any time. (Photo by Yastremska / Bigstockphoto)
