Apple has of course also taken the Weather app into account in iOS 16 and made some notable changes. It has added new types of notifications and expanded the information you can see about everything from humidity to temperature to visibility. For many of these new features, Apple has taken information from Dark Sky, a weather app Apple bought in 2020.
The design of the Weather app hasn't changed much, but Apple has made a major update to the information available to you. The Weather app has long had small modules that show you information like the 10-day forecast, daily temperature, air quality, precipitation, UV index, sunset and sunrise times, wind, humidity, perceived temperature, visibility, and air pressure. But now you can tap on any of these modules to get more information.
temperature
The Temperature module shows a graph of temperature throughout the day, including highs and lows. This should fix an issue in the iOS 15 Weather app where it was unclear when the day's low was measured. The module also provides a text summary of weather conditions. In the 10-day forecast, you can tap any day to see the daily map of temperature ranges.
air quality
The Air Quality module shows a graph showing the current air conditions in your area, along with additional information about the health impacts of the current conditions and the main pollutant. You can also view a larger map of air quality.
precipitation
The precipitation module is similar to the precipitation information previously available, showing where storms are expected on a map. If you zoom in, you'll see a 12-hour rain forecast. There's also an interface that provides details on the total amount of precipitation over the past 24 hours, and how much rain, sleet, or snow fell at what time.
Feeling
This module provides a second temperature graph that takes into account humidity, wind, and other factors to give you a better idea of the ambient temperature.
UV index
The UV Index module shows the current UV level and peak UV levels during the day. It also displays text informing you whether sun protection is recommended.
sunset/sunrise
The sunrise and sunset module shows you when the sun will rise or set depending on the time of day, and when you can expect first and last light. It also includes monthly sunrise and sunset averages and a display of total daylight.
wind
The wind module provides a daily overview, the current wind conditions and a graph with the wind speeds and directions during the day.
humidity
The humidity module shows a graph of humidity throughout the day, divided into six-hour increments. It also shows the average humidity and dew point.
visibility
The visibility module shows the visibility in kilometers for the entire day as well as a daily summary.
air pressure
The air pressure module shows the current air pressure, the air pressure throughout the day and an indication of whether the air pressure is rising or falling.
severe weather warnings
With iOS 16, the Weather app can send a notification when a severe weather warning is issued in your area. This can alert you to major rainstorms, floods, heat waves, tornadoes, and more. You can turn on severe weather alerts for both your current location and any location you've added in the Weather app. According to Apple, severe weather data is available in Australia, Canada, Japan, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, Thailand, the United States, and most countries and regions in Europe.
weather lock screen
While it's not technically part of the Weather app, iOS 16 has its own Weather lock screen. It displays the current temperature and graphics from the Weather app for your location, so if it's sunny, you'll see the sun, and if it's raining, you'll see rain, just like in the animated Weather app.
weather widgets
There are also a number of different weather widgets that you can add to any of your lock screens. There is a larger display showing the temperature, current state and high/low, as well as individual options for air quality, UV index and temperature. To use the weather widget, location services must be enabled.
More locations
In iOS 15, you can only add up to 20 alternative locations to the Weather app – in iOS 16, there are a total of 50.
weather app for the iPad
With the updates for iOS 16/iPadOS 16, there is finally a weather app for the iPad. It is identical to the weather app for the iPhone, but has been adapted to the larger display of the iPad. Whether your device is compatible with the new software is compatible, you can find out here. (Photo by hadrian / Bigstockphoto)
