Apple is apparently working on a foldable iPhone, which is scheduled to launch in 2026. Speculation about such a device has been circulating for years, but now evidence from reliable sources is accumulating. Industry experts such as Mark Gurman, Ming-Chi Kuo, and Jeff Pu are providing concrete details about the design, features, and planned market launch. Even though Apple itself hasn't made an official statement yet, it's now pretty clear where the project is headed.
While other manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola have been offering foldable smartphones for some time, Apple has so far been sitting out the trend. Its strategy: to launch later, but with more mature technology. That seems to be exactly the case now. So if you're waiting for a foldable iPhone, it currently looks like Apple will actually deliver in 2026. The leaked information provides a good overview of what to expect.
Design: Book format like the Galaxy Z Fold
According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple is planning a book-style device similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. It will open lengthwise, not horizontally like the Galaxy Z Flip. When folded, the iPhone will be about 9 to 9.5 millimeters thick, and when unfolded, only about 4.5 to 4.8 millimeters thick. This keeps the device relatively slim despite the folding mechanism.
Displays: 5.5 inches outside, 7.8 inches inside
The foldable iPhone is expected to have two screens. On the outside, you'll get a 5.5-inch display that functions like a regular iPhone. When you open it, you'll see a large 7.8-inch display, more reminiscent of an iPad mini. The inner display is said to be virtually crease-free—a point where many current foldables still show weaknesses. Two independent sources have now confirmed these display sizes.
Materials: titanium, stainless steel and liquid metal
Apple apparently plans to use titanium for the casing, which should make the device both lightweight and sturdy. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the hinge is made from a combination of titanium, stainless steel, and so-called liquid metal. The latter is intended to help increase durability and prevent the formation of visible creases in the display. Apple uses liquid metal in a special die-casting process – a technical approach that hardly any other manufacturer has used in this field.
Cameras: Dual rear camera, front camera for both modes
The camera setup remains classic. A dual camera is said to be installed on the back. There's also a front camera that should work both when folded and opened. This is useful for selfies and video calls, regardless of how you're using the device.
Authentication: Touch ID in the side button
According to current information, Apple will use a Touch ID sensor in the side button instead of Face ID. This saves space in the casing, which is particularly tight for a foldable device. Touch ID in the side button is already familiar from several iPad models – so technically, it's nothing new, but it's a sensible application.
Battery: High-density cells for better runtime
There are also interesting details regarding the battery. Apple reportedly plans to use particularly space-saving components, such as a smaller display driver, to create more room for battery cells. So-called high-density cells will be used, which will also be used in the planned iPhone 17 Air. The goal: better battery life despite the larger display and complex mechanics.
Price: expected to be $2,000 to $2,500
Several sources estimate that the foldable iPhone will cost between $2,000 and $2,500 in the US, making it the most expensive iPhone ever. Nevertheless, observers expect that many Apple fans will be willing to pay that price – provided the device delivers impressive quality and user experience.
Market launch: second half of 2026
Analyst Jeff Pu reports that the foldable iPhone has now entered the so-called NPI phase at Foxconn. This stands for "New Product Introduction," meaning that preparations for series production are underway. Kuo and Pu both expect mass production to begin in the second half of 2026. An exact release date has not yet been announced.
Foldable iPhone: Everything points to a market launch in 2026
The foldable iPhone is no longer a rumor, but a likely product for 2026. Apple is focusing on a sophisticated design, high-quality materials, robust mechanics, and energy-efficient technology. With two displays, Touch ID, a robust hinge, and a high price, the device is clearly aimed at the premium segment. Anyone who has been waiting for a foldable from Apple should keep an eye on 2026—there's a good chance it will be there by then.
