A new Apple TV is in the works and is scheduled for release in 2025. Rumor has it it will feature a new Apple Wi-Fi chip that supports the fast Wi-Fi 7 standard. This would make the device significantly more powerful—especially for streaming and data transfer over Wi-Fi.
The Apple TV has become a staple in many households. It's not just a streaming device, but also a central element in the Apple ecosystem—for example, it supports AirPlay, HomeKit, and Apple Arcade. With the current 2022 model, Apple already has a solid device with Wi-Fi 6 on the market. But the next big leap is coming. Various sources indicate that the new model will arrive this year—with noticeable improvements.
Wi-Fi 7: What does the new standard bring?
Wi-Fi 7 is the successor to Wi-Fi 6 and 6E and primarily offers higher speeds and more stable connections. With a compatible router, you can transmit data simultaneously over the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. This increases overall bandwidth and reduces interference. Ideally, Wi-Fi 7 enables transfer rates of over 40 Gbps, which is about four times faster than Wi-Fi 6E. Latency is also significantly reduced, which is particularly noticeable when gaming or quickly navigating menus. Multiple devices in the home can also be operated more reliably simultaneously.
What exactly is known about the new Apple TV?
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that the new Apple TV will be equipped with Apple's own Wi-Fi chip. The chip is expected to support at least Wi-Fi 6E. However, Gurman argues that it's unlikely that Apple will develop two different chips (one for Wi-Fi 6E and one for Wi-Fi 7). Since all four upcoming iPhone 17 models are already planned with Wi-Fi 7, it's very likely that the new Apple TV will also feature this standard.

Analysts such as Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu confirm that Apple is working on its own Wi-Fi 7 chip, which will be used in several devices in 2025 – including the iPhone 17 and the new Apple TV. The current Apple TV 4K from 2022 supports Wi-Fi 6. The more expensive version also has an Ethernet port for wired connections. With Wi-Fi 7, the new model would be significantly more competitive wirelessly – especially if you stream a lot in 4K or with Dolby Atmos or use online gaming.
When will the new model be released?
There's no exact date yet, but a market launch is expected around the end of 2025. This fits with Apple's usual Apple TV update schedule—usually every two to three years. So, anyone currently considering a new model could wait a little longer to benefit directly from the new technology.
What you can expect from the new Apple TV
The next Apple TV is likely to represent a clear technological leap forward. With Wi-Fi 7, you'll get significantly faster transfer rates, lower latency, and more stable connections – assuming you have a suitable router. It's very likely that Apple will rely on this new standard, especially since upcoming iPhones will also be equipped with it. If you're looking to modernize your home network or improve your streaming experience, waiting for the new Apple TV this year could be worth it. Once Apple releases official information, we'll see how significant the upgrade actually is. However, the evidence already points to clear progress.
