Apple is apparently working on a new generation of AirPods that will feature integrated cameras, according to a report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. The idea behind it is to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and visual intelligence directly into the wireless headphones. This could mean that in the future, AirPods will no longer just be used for listening to music or making phone calls, but will also enable a whole new way of interacting with the environment. It is still unclear when exactly this technology will be available, but some details have already been revealed. In particular, the connection with Spatial Audio and Apple's Vision Pro headset could play a central role.
Since their launch, AirPods have evolved from simple wireless headphones to a vital part of the Apple ecosystem. With the AirPods Pro, Apple has already integrated features like active noise cancellation and spatial audio to enhance the user experience. Now, the company is apparently going a step further and wants to equip the AirPods with cameras. This could turn them into a kind of wearable AI assistant that not only processes voice input but also recognizes and interprets visual information. The new technology is still in development, but some of the potential applications already give an idea of the direction Apple could take.
Visual intelligence and new Siri features
A central element of the new AirPods technology could be so-called visual intelligence. This function allows information from the environment to be captured in real time and used for various purposes. With the introduction of the iPhone 16, Apple already integrated a new camera control that makes it easier to take photos or quickly change camera settings. But the integration of visual intelligence goes far beyond that. With the new AirPods, it could be possible to retrieve information about objects, texts, or locations directly via voice commands to Siri. One example would be the automatic recognition of an event flyer, which can then be added to the calendar with a voice command. This technology could also be useful for translations or product information. If, for example, you are looking at packaging with a foreign language, the AirPods could automatically recognize the information and provide you with a translation.
Spatial Audio and the connection to Apple Vision Pro
Another potential application for the cameras in the AirPods is spatial audio. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that Apple could use the cameras to enhance the spatial computing experience with Vision Pro and other Apple headsets. For example, if you're watching a video with Vision Pro while wearing the new AirPods, the cameras could accurately track your head movements. This would allow the sound to adapt to the position of your ears, creating an even more immersive experience. With this technology, Apple would further expand the entire spatial computing ecosystem and make AirPods an even more important part of its product strategy.
Control by hand gestures
Another possible feature of the new AirPods with cameras is so-called in-air gesture control. The cameras could be used to detect hand movements and interpret them as control inputs. This could mean, for example, that you could answer a call or adjust the volume with a specific hand gesture without directly touching the iPhone or AirPods. In practice, this would enable a completely new way of operating the device, which could be particularly useful in situations where you don't have a free hand to operate your device.
When can we expect the AirPods with camera?
According to Mark Gurman, Apple will not launch this technology immediately. The next generation of AirPods Pro, expected to be released this year, will likely not include a camera. It could be 2027 at the earliest, when Apple might equip the AirPods Pro 4 with this new technology. This would also coincide with other developments in AI and visual intelligence that Apple is currently working on. At the same time, Apple is apparently also planning smart glasses that could be comparable to the Meta Ray-Ban Glasses. AirPods with cameras would then be another building block in Apple's strategy to more closely integrate AI and augmented reality.
Apple AirPods are getting smarter
With the planned integration of cameras into the AirPods, Apple could create an entirely new product category. The headphones would then no longer be used solely for music or phone calls, but could also serve as visual assistants that capture and process information from the environment. Particularly exciting are the potential connections with Siri, Vision Pro, and control via hand gestures. Even though it may be a few years before this technology comes to market, it's already clear that Apple has big plans for the future of the AirPods. If Apple actually implements this idea, AirPods could be much more than just headphones—they could become a smart companion in everyday life. Are you looking for new accessories?
