At the Snapdragon Technology Summit 2019, Niantic – Pokemon Go developer – announced a new partnership with Qualcomm Technologies.
The well-known chip manufacturer Qualcomm has entered into a multi-year partnership with the Pokemon Go developer Niantic. The aim is to further advance the world of AR (augmented reality), VR (virtual reality) and MR (mixed reality). According to the agreement, new AR hardware is to be created - including augmented reality glasses. The partnership will initially extend across two platforms. Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 platform will be the first. This includes the use of XR, 5G and AI, with the aim of achieving the leading position in XR development. If the desired result is achieved, AR, VR and MR would be scalable on it.
Developers also get access
Niantic's real world platform - known from Pokemon Go, Harry Potter Wizards Unite and Ingress - would then receive the AR-first SDK. This would result in an immense improvement in the user experience - the integration of various cloud services would also be possible. The combination of both platforms would ultimately enable the development of new hardware, software and cloud components - according to Niantic. The end result would be AR glasses that would be compatible with Niantic's games, among other things. There is a bonus - developers will also have access to this major project.
