Sony officially announced the new Playstation 5 for 2020 in its blog today - the company also revealed further details about the new console generation.
The blog post has now finally confirmed the name and release date - the console will be called Playstation 5 and will hit the shelves in time for the 2020 Christmas season. No specific date was given - this will probably not be announced before 2020. It is assumed that the Playstation 5 will launch almost at the same time as Microsoft's latest Xbox generation. In the latest blog entry entitled "PlayStation 5 Launches Holiday 2020“Sony writes as follows:
Since we announced our next-generation console in April, we know there's been a lot of excitement and interest in learning more about what the future of gaming will bring. Today, I'm proud to announce that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we'll launch in time for Holiday 2020.
With "Holiday 2020“ means the Christmas season - so the new Playstation will be launched in time for the Christmas season in the new year. Sony has focused on the new controllers in the announcement - no further details on the actual Playstation 5 hardware were given. The new controller does not yet have an official name, but it is assumed that Sony will keep to tradition and call it the DualShock 5. Sony describes the new controllers as follows:
To that end, there are two key innovations with the new PlayStation 5 controller. First, we're adopting haptic feedback to replace the "rumble" technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you really feel a wider range of feedback, so hitting a wall in a race car feels very different to tackling on the football field. You can even get a feel for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or moving through mud.
The second innovation is something we call “Adaptive Triggers,” which have been integrated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers to give you the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. Combined with haptics, this can result in a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game designers have started receiving early versions of the new controller, and we can't wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features.
Further details in the coming months
A particularly prominent feature of the Playstation 5 is the customization of game data. PS5 users can decide for themselves what they want to install from a game. The player is free to install the story and online modes together or to only include the online area in the installation. Another feature is the display of game information. All details about the game are shown in advance - this means that it is no longer necessary to start the title to see this information. According to Sony, further details about hardware and functions will follow in the coming months. (Photo by Samsonovs / Bigstockphoto)
