Apple is apparently working on a new version of its popular mouse. According to initial reports, the Magic Mouse 3 is supposed to address some fundamental weaknesses of the current models. It hasn't been officially announced yet, but there are concrete hints of what will change. Here's what's currently known about the Magic Mouse 3.
The Magic Mouse has been a staple of the Apple world for years. Anyone who buys an iMac or Mac Pro gets it as standard. Visually, it fits perfectly into the Apple ecosystem, but technically, not much has changed. The charging port on the bottom was often a point of criticism. The ergonomics also left much to be desired. Now there are signs that Apple is improving precisely these areas with the Magic Mouse 3.
Charging port to finally be relocated
One issue that has been a source of debate since the introduction of the built-in battery in 2015: the charging port is located on the bottom of the mouse. This makes it unusable while charging. This problem persisted even after the switch from Lightning to USB-C in 2024. According to a report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple plans to relocate the charging port on the Magic Mouse 3. While an exact design was not disclosed, it is likely that the port will be located on the front or side in the future. This would make it possible for the first time to use the mouse while charging. While charging only takes a few minutes and is rarely necessary, the old design was simply not practical.
Improved ergonomics are planned
In addition to the charging port, the shape is also set to be revised. The current Magic Mouse looks elegant, but its flat design makes it uncomfortable for many users over time. Apple wants to change that. Gurman reports that the Magic Mouse 3 will be more ergonomically designed. What it will look like exactly is not yet known. There are no sketches or design leaks. However, it is possible that Apple is taking inspiration from successful alternatives – for example, the MX Master 3S from Logitech. This mouse offers a contoured housing with a thumb rest, precise scrolling with two wheels, and good handling for extended periods of use. Since the design of the Magic Mouse has hardly changed since its launch in 2009, a complete overhaul is long overdue. A more ergonomic model would make it significantly more attractive to many users – especially those who work with it all day.
Previous changes to the Magic Mouse
The Magic Mouse has undergone only a few changes over the years. In 2015, the switch from AA batteries to an integrated rechargeable battery was completed. In 2021, new color variants were released to match the iMac. In 2024, the charging port was switched from Lightning to USB-C. That's essentially it. Even though the design still looks modern, Apple has paid little attention to the mouse for a long time. With the Magic Mouse 3, that could change. The planned innovations indicate that Apple has recognized the importance of functionality and comfort in input devices.
Release date and price
According to Gurman, the Magic Mouse 3 will be released in 2026 at the earliest. There's no exact date. The price is also currently unknown. The current Magic Mouse costs €85 in Germany. It's also included with iMacs and Mac Pros. Whether the new version will also be included as a standard mouse or whether there will be an additional charge is not yet known.
Magic Mouse 3 aims to iron out the weaknesses of its predecessors
The Magic Mouse 3 is finally supposed to address some of the biggest criticisms of its predecessors. The charging port will likely be relocated so that the mouse remains usable while charging. Additionally, a more ergonomic design is planned, which should make working for longer periods more comfortable. Even though the exact release date is still in the future, the direction is clear: Apple is working on a meaningful upgrade for the Magic Mouse. Anyone who has been considering switching to a different mouse should keep an eye on developments surrounding the Magic Mouse 3.
