Apple is working on the next iPhone generation and there are already many rumors and leaks about the iPhone 17. The camera design in particular is expected to change significantly on the Pro models. While the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Air could get a new camera bar, the standard model is expected to remain true to its previous look. The presentation of the new iPhone generation is expected in September as usual.
With each new iPhone generation, there are not only technical improvements but often design changes as well. This year, Apple seems to be revising the camera modules in particular. But not all models are affected. While the Pro models could get a redesigned camera bar, the standard model of the iPhone 17 will apparently stick with the familiar design. Anyone who was hoping for major visual changes could be disappointed - for others, it may be an advantage that Apple is not turning everything upside down.
The new camera bar for the iPhone 17 Pro
According to recent reports, in particular by Jon Prosser, the iPhone 17 Pro will get a revised rear camera. Instead of individual camera elements on the back, Apple is said to house the lenses in a rectangular camera bar with rounded corners. This design change could not only be for optical reasons but could also offer functional advantages. A flatter, more stable placement on surfaces would be conceivable, as would an improved internal arrangement of the camera hardware.
iPhone 17 Air: Also with new camera design
Not only the Pro model but also the iPhone 17 Air are said to receive the new camera layout. This means that Apple may be aiming for a more uniform design for its more powerful iPhones. If this is confirmed, it would be a clear sign that Apple is bringing the Air model even closer to the Pro devices while the standard model deliberately remains more classic.
The standard iPhone 17 remains with the old design
While the more expensive models will receive a design change, the standard iPhone 17 will be very similar to its predecessor. According to Prosser, it will retain a pill-shaped camera bump with two vertically arranged lenses. This is the same design that Apple also uses on the iPhone 16. This would make the iPhone 17 the most unspectacular model in the new series in terms of appearance. However, this decision could have more than just disadvantages. Users who cannot get used to the new camera design of the Pro models will still get a device with a classic look.
Expected presentation in September
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 in September again. The company has been following this schedule for years, and there is no indication that this will change this year.
No redesign for the standard iPhone 17 – is that good or bad?
While the Pro models and the Air model are being visually revised, the standard iPhone 17 remains largely unchanged. Anyone hoping for a new camera bar will probably have to go for the more expensive versions. However, anyone who would rather have an iPhone with the familiar design still has an option with the standard model. Whether the changes are worth it or whether it makes more sense to wait for the next major redesign will only become clear after the official launch. Until then, it remains to be seen whether the current rumors turn out to be true. (Image: Apple)
