Apple has taken its time when it comes to foldable devices. While other manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei and Google have already launched several generations of foldable smartphones, Apple has been reticent to make official announcements. However, numerous patents and insider reports indicate that foldable Apple products are not far off. Rumors speak of several possible devices: an iPhone Flip, an iPhone Fold or iPad Fold, and a MacBook Fold. These new formats could fundamentally change the Apple ecosystem. The challenge, however, is to develop a foldable device that meets Apple's high design and quality standards.
The idea behind foldable displays is not new. For almost ten years, there have been smartphones and tablets that can be folded up to become either more compact or larger. In the past, Apple has often deliberately taken its time to perfect new technologies before integrating them into its own products. That could be the case here too. There are indications that Apple is actively researching foldable displays and testing corresponding prototypes. But before such a product comes to market, several problems must be solved. The thickness of the devices when closed and the durability of the displays are particularly crucial challenges. Let's take a closer look at the rumors surrounding foldable iPhones, iPads and Macs.
iPhone Flip – A foldable clamshell phone from Apple?
One of the most likely variants for a foldable iPhone is the so-called iPhone Flip. This is a device that folds up in a similar way to the old flip phones - with a horizontal hinge in the middle. This concept would be comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, but would of course fit into the Apple design. When closed, the iPhone Flip would be compact and easy to transport, while when opened it offers a large display. Technically, the iPhone Flip should be comparable to Apple's current Pro models.
Will the iPhone 17 Air be the forerunner of a foldable iPhone?
It is also conceivable that the upcoming iPhone 17 Air will serve as a kind of precursor to this new device, as Apple is reportedly working on ever thinner designs. A key question is how Apple plans to solve the problem of foldability. Foldable displays tend to develop creases or visible folds over time - a problem that Apple has consistently avoided with its devices so far. In addition, the iPhone Flip could have a second display on the outside. This would make it possible to see notifications or use basic functions without having to open the device.
iPhone Fold or iPad Fold – A hybrid device with a larger display?
Another possibility for a foldable Apple product would be a device that can transform from a smartphone into a tablet. This concept is known as the iPhone Fold or iPad Fold. Here, the device would have a foldable internal display that unfolds into a larger screen when needed. This would make it possible to carry a compact smartphone that transforms into a small iPad when needed. There are rumors that Apple is already working with LG Display to develop such a screen. In this case, the iPhone Fold could be some kind of hybrid device, moving towards either a larger iPhone or a smaller iPad.
Portability vs. Thickness: The Design Challenge for Apple
Such a device would be particularly interesting for the professional sector. The challenge, however, is to make it so thin that it does not become too bulky when closed. Another possibility would be a 13-inch iPad Pro with a foldable display. In this case, the device would fold in the middle and thus become more portable. Apple will probably take its time with the introduction of such a device, as foldable displays are still sensitive and the technology is not yet fully developed.
MacBook Fold – Apple’s first foldable laptop?
In addition to smartphones and tablets, there are also reports of a foldable MacBook. The entire display would extend over the inside of the device and it would be possible to use the MacBook either as a large tablet or as a laptop with a virtual keyboard. According to initial information, Apple could be working on a model with a 20-inch screen. A smaller 18-inch model is also being discussed. When unfolded, the MacBook Fold would be as big as two iPad Pros next to each other. Users could use it fully as a tablet or use it half-open as a laptop with a touchscreen keyboard. The biggest question remains the operating system. macOS is not designed for pure touch control, so Apple may have to develop a customized version of its operating system or even a completely new interface for such devices. Rumors suggest that a foldable MacBook could come onto the market in 2028 at the earliest.
When could Apple release a foldable device?
Although there are many rumors, the timing of a release remains unclear. Apple is known for taking its time to perfect new technologies. According to reports, Apple is currently testing various designs and display technologies. Some analysts expect the first foldable Apple product to appear in 2027 at the earliest. However, there is also speculation that Apple may wait even longer to bring a truly mature product to market. One important factor could be the iPhone 17 Air. If Apple is already using particularly thin components here, this could be a preparation for future foldable devices. Ultimately, it remains to be seen which direction Apple actually takes. The only thing that is certain is that the company will not bring half-finished products to market. If Apple decides to go with foldable devices, it will be with a mature solution that solves existing problems in this area.
Foldable Apple devices – a calculated step into the future
The idea of a foldable iPhone, iPad or MacBook is exciting, but Apple is not going to let the competition push it. The company has often deliberately taken its time in the past to optimize new technologies. Rumors suggest that Apple is currently working on various formats, from an iPhone Flip to a foldable iPad and even a foldable MacBook. But before such a device comes to market, Apple must overcome key challenges such as the durability of the displays and the thickness of the devices when folded. Whether a foldable Apple device will actually appear by 2027 or later remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Apple would have a major impact on the market with such a product - just as it has already done with the iPhone, iPad and MacBook.
