In recent years, technological development in the world of artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant progress. While companies like OpenAI and Google have launched generative AI solutions that are making waves around the world, Apple seems to be lagging behind in this area. At WWDC 2024, Apple presented its vision of "Apple Intelligence" - a set of AI-based tools designed to revolutionize the user experience. But so far, Apple Intelligence remains more of a concept than a tangible reality.
Apple Intelligence was supposed to be Apple's answer to the growing popularity and demand for AI-powered tools. Expectations were high when Apple unveiled its plans at WWDC 2024. Many of us were excited that Apple would finally enter the field of generative AI. But the reality after the presentation showed that Apple Intelligence is still far from keeping up with the established solutions of its competitors.
Apple Intelligence – A Summary
Apple Intelligence was announced as a comprehensive suite of AI-based tools that would take the user experience to new levels. This includes writing tools for proofreading and rewriting text, the ability to summarize articles, emails and notifications, and even an app for creating illustrations called Genmoji. Another highlight was supposed to be the new Siri with Apple Intelligence - faster, smarter and more deeply integrated into apps. It sounded promising, but once the keynote was over, it turned out that Apple Intelligence was more of a concept than a tangible reality.
A limited preview
With the introduction of the first beta versions of iOS 18, hopes for Apple Intelligence were further dampened. The announced features were not included in the early beta versions, and Apple eventually confirmed that Apple Intelligence would not be available in time for the release of iOS 18.0. Instead, a limited version of Apple Intelligence was introduced with iOS 18.1 beta - but with significant limitations. Currently, users can only rewrite text and summarize articles or notifications with the iOS 18.1 beta. Some improvements in the Photos app and a new Siri animation show progress, but the big promises, such as the creation of Genmojis, deleting objects from photos or expanded Siri integration, remain unfulfilled. These features are only supposed to be available "over the next year" - a timeframe that has disappointed many users.
Apple Intelligence compared to the competition
The biggest challenge for Apple Intelligence is the huge lead of its competitors. OpenAI with ChatGPT and Google with its AI assistant Gemini have already made impressive progress and are setting new standards for generative AI. These companies are continuously bringing new features to market and expanding support for different languages and regions. Apple, on the other hand, is struggling to keep up. While the competition is making its generative AI solutions available worldwide, Apple Intelligence is expected to be usable only in the US until next year. This delay could have serious consequences for Apple, as users may increasingly consider alternatives that are already available and work better.
The Future of Apple Intelligence
Apple is known for perfecting products before they hit the market. But in the case of Apple Intelligence, this strategy could backfire. The perception Many users believe that Apple entered the generative AI market too late and that the features it offers lag behind those of its competitors. It is to be hoped that Apple will make significant improvements to Apple Intelligence in the coming months to catch up. It is crucial that Apple not only delivers the announced features as quickly as possible but also expands support for additional languages and regions. Otherwise, Apple Intelligence could become another example of Apple falling behind the competition.
The clock is ticking: Will Apple Intelligence catch up?
Apple Intelligence was meant to be a milestone in the development of AI tools, but so far it remains a concept that falls short of expectations. While competitors have already made impressive progress, Apple is struggling to turn the promised features into reality. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether Apple Intelligence can catch up or whether it will become another chapter in the story of missed opportunities. One thing is certain, however: expectations are high for Apple, and time is running out to keep up in the highly competitive AI market. (Image: Apple)
