With the introduction of iOS 18, Apple has improved the way you can manage your passwords and logins. The new Passwords app offers a user-friendly interface and advanced features that make password management easier and more secure. In this article, you'll learn everything you need to know about the features of the new Passwords app in iOS 18.
Managing passwords can be complicated and time-consuming, especially when you use different logins and passwords for different websites and apps. The new Passwords app in iOS 18 aims to solve this challenge by providing a one-stop shop for all your login information. From easily managing your passwords to advanced security features, the Passwords app is designed to make your life easier.
layout and user interface
The Passwords app is automatically installed when you update your device to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS Sequoia. The app has a clean layout with a search bar at the top so you can quickly find the information you need. Previously saved passwords and logins from iCloud Keychain are immediately available and can be accessed with Face ID or Touch ID. The app is divided into different sections, including Passwords and Logins, Passkeys, Two-Factor Authentication Codes, WiFi Passwords, Security Alerts, and Deleted Logins.
Adding and managing passwords
To add a new login or password, simply tap the "+" button. After entering the necessary information such as website and username, you can save the password. Existing entries can easily be edited and additional information added. New logins are added automatically if you have activated the iCloud keychain and create a new login in Safari or in an app.
Changing and deleting passwords
Changing a password is also straightforward. You find the login in question, tap "Edit" and select "Change password". Deleted passwords are stored in a special folder for 30 days before they are permanently deleted. You can also permanently remove these passwords immediately.
two-factor authentication
The Passwords app also supports two-factor authentication. You can add an authentication code by scanning a QR code or entering a setup key. These codes appear when you search for a password or browse logins in the All section.
passkeys
Passkeys offer a more secure alternative to traditional passwords. They allow you to log in to your Apple device using Face ID or Touch ID. Passkeys use a cryptographic key pair that protects your accounts from phishing attempts.
Sharing passwords
The Passwords app lets you share passwords with trusted contacts. You can create groups and give them access to specific logins. These logins can be removed or updated at any time.
AutoFill and Sort
AutoFill automatically fills in login information and passwords when you visit a website in Safari. Sorting options in the Passwords app allow you to organize your entries by various criteria, such as date modified, date created, or website.
synchronization and security
Passwords are automatically synced via iCloud Keychain. You can even access your logins on a Windows PC. A special security section informs you about reused, weak, or leaked passwords and provides recommendations for changing them.
Importing passwords
Apple plans to provide a tool to import passwords from other services such as 1Password and LastPass, but this feature is not yet available.
