Along with the iPhone, the Apple Watch is one of the products that Apple updates every year and is one of the devices that we can definitely expect this fall.
Rumors about new Apple Watch models are often overshadowed by rumors about the iPhone. But here and there, a little information leaks out. Below we summarize everything we know about the Apple Watch Series 9.
Apple Watch Series 9: An iterative update
In 2022, Apple focused its development resources on the Apple Watch Ultra, which is why we didn't see many new features for the standard Series 8. We expect the same this year - Apple is working on future Apple Watch technology for the larger model, and rumors suggest we'll see minor updates for the Series 9 with few new features at this time.
processor improvements
The S8 chip in the Apple Watch Series 8 is the same as the S7 chip in the Apple Watch Series 7, which offered the same performance as the S6 chip in the Apple Watch Series 6. There have been no notable improvements to the Apple Watch's processor in recent years, so it's possible we'll see an updated S9 chip with some small performance improvements.
Bluetooth
Apple has equipped the Apple Watch Ultra with Bluetooth 5.3 and in 2023 this could also be the case with the Series 9. Apple has gradually updated its product range with the latest Bluetooth standard.
battery life
Any processor upgrade could result in a slight improvement in battery life, although we don't expect any major updates. Apple could also use the efficiency gains for additional always-on display features or other improvements.
Other functions
With the exception of a new chip, the Series 9 is expected to offer the same features as the Series 8.
A new Apple Watch Ultra?
The Apple Watch Ultra is a new product in the Apple Watch lineup starting in 2022, so we don't yet know if it will be updated annually. There are no rumors about a 2023 version of the Apple Watch Ultra but there are details about a 2024 model, so Apple could wait until 2024 to update the device.
A new Apple Watch SE?
Apple hasn't updated the Apple Watch SE every year in the past, and there's no indication there will be an update in 2023. The SE was updated in 2022, so this is unlikely.
Future Features
There isn't much to look forward to with the Apple Watch Series 9 so far. But there are some future technologies that Apple will be incorporating into the Apple Watch that will make for exciting updates at a later date. Here is a list:
- MicroLED display - Rumor has it that Apple will introduce MicroLED technology for the Apple Watch as early as 2024 and will develop its own displays for it, similar to the way it develops chips. The MicroLED display will be used in a high-end Apple Watch, probably the Apple Watch Ultra. MicroLED technology enables brighter and more vibrant colors as well as a better viewing angle.
- Larger display for the Apple Watch Ultra – Apple is working on a new version of the Apple Watch Ultra with an even larger 2.1-inch display, an update that could coincide with the switch to MicroLED.
- Noninvasive blood glucose monitoring – Apple has been working on noninvasive blood glucose monitoring for the Apple Watch for years and has made so much progress that the concept is now mature and viable enough to be included in a future Apple Watch with some improvements. Noninvasive blood glucose monitoring is still years away but when it is introduced, it will be one of the biggest updates to the Apple Watch.
When will the Apple Watch Series 9 be introduced?
Apple updates the Apple Watch every year along with new iPhone models, so we can expect the Apple Watch Series 9 to be announced in September and go on sale two weeks later.
