According to a new report, the next iPhone generation will not have a 5G modem – Intel itself is to blame.
Without a cellular modem, the iPhone cannot connect to the outside world. In recent years, Qualcomm was the main supplier of communications chips. The collaboration with the chip manufacturer was terminated due to a patent war. Apple believes that Qualcomm is charging far too high licensing fees - the semiconductor manufacturer is abusing its market power, according to Apple. That is why Cupertino has made chip manufacturer Intel the main supplier.
5G much later than expected?
According to a new report from the Reuters news agency, the iPhone will not be equipped with a 5G modem before 2020. Chip manufacturer Intel is said to have said exactly that at an internal meeting. According to this, the "Sunny Peak" 5G chips cannot be delivered this year as expected. This means that Apple would offer 5G much later than the competition. If this really happens, it would be a major setback for Cupertino. There has been speculation for months that Apple wants to become independent in this area too. However, this is not expected to happen before 2021. Apple may find a replacement - experts are guessing it will be the company MediaTek.
