Since Apple just released iOS 16 Beta 2, the company highlighted some new features for SMS filtering in Messages in the operating system's release notes - here's an overview.
Apple had already announced at WWDC 2022 that iOS 16 will add 12 new subcategories to the SMS filter API. With Beta 2, they are now available to developers. The company explainedthat iOS 16 beta 2 allows developers to classify incoming SMS from unknown numbers into 12 new subcategories within the transactional and promotional categories to improve organization. Additionally, iPhone users with dual SIM cards can now filter their messages by their SIM cards. They can choose to see "All Lines" or just the primary or second SIM number.
iOS 16 Beta 2: Further improvements in Messages
With iOS 16 Beta 2 expanded Apple also launched the "Report Junk" feature in Messages for select US carriers, which allows users to report SMS/MMS spam to the carriers. The option is visible in messages from unknown senders. Last but not least, Messages for Indian users now supports the extraction of events from SMS. These event and appointment messages are displayed as Siri suggestions and are presented to users in the message thread and calendar inbox.
