Apple is adding virtual memory swapping to iPadOS 16, allowing apps on the M1 iPad Pro and iPad Air to use free and available flash storage as additional memory for demanding tasks.
With iPadOS 15, certain apps can use up to 12GB of memory on the M1 iPad Pro, which has 16GB of RAM total. With iPadOS 16 and virtual memory swapping, Apple is increasing the amount of memory an app can use by tapping into the device's available flash storage. On M1 iPads with 256GB of storage and above, apps can use up to 16GB of memory for the most demanding workloads.

Virtual memory swapping and the higher memory cap join a number of features coming with iPadOS 16 and exclusive to the M1 iPad Pro and iPad Air, including Stage Manager. Stage Manager is a completely new way for Pro users to use their iPad, allowing them to open multiple app windows at once and layer them on top of each other.
