How about a special rugged Apple Watch? A model that is primarily suitable for extreme sports. Now there are reports that such a version is actually being considered.
According to a new report by Mark Gurman via Bloomberg Apple is considering the possibility of launching an Apple Watch with a rugged casing suitable for use in extreme environments. The report states:
Apple Inc. is considering launching an Apple Watch with a rugged case aimed at athletes, hikers and others who use the device in more extreme environments. The Cupertino, California-based tech giant has internally discussed launching such a Watch variant in 2021 or 2022 at the earliest.
Apple Watch "Explorer Edition" with rubberized case
Interestingly, this is not the first time that Apple has considered such a model. The company has already wanted to introduce a model for extreme sports alongside the original Apple Watch, which was launched in 2015.
If Apple goes ahead this time, the rugged version would be an additional model, similar to how Apple offers a lower-priced option called the Apple Watch SE and special editions with Nike Inc. and Hermes International. Sometimes referred to internally within Apple as the "Explorer Edition," the product would have the same functionality as a standard Apple Watch but with added shock resistance and protection in the vein of Casio's G-Shock watches.
The current Apple Watch models are water resistant to 50 meters. But Gurman says Apple could make a new device even more "rugged" by giving it a rubberized casing that would make it more resistant to damage in extreme environments compared to the current range of aluminum, titanium and stainless steel casings. Although such a model is actively being considered, Gurman warns that such a version could end up being just an idea. (Photo by Denys Prykhodov / Bigstockphoto)
