The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei today announced at a event introduced its latest foldable smartphone, the Mate X2, in China.
The successor to 2019's Mate X has received a radical redesign and now features a large, full-length 8-inch screen that folds inward, rather than having the main display on the outside like the original device.

The main screen offers a 180Hz display with an 8:7.1 aspect ratio. When the phone is folded, a second 6.45-inch display (with a 12:9 aspect ratio) can be used on the outside, similar to Samsung's Galaxy Fold design. Both screens have a wide color gamut and ultra-low reflection, which exceeds the reflection level of Apple's Pro Display XDR - according to Huawei. The update also completely redesigned the hinge design. This now allows for a "seamless" fold with no gap, using a waterdrop-shaped cavity that houses the folding system inside. The dual-spiral structure is made of high-strength steel, which "eliminates the problem of creasing in the display" and also enables a 40 percent flatter panel design, according to the company.

In terms of cameras, the Mate X2 features an Ultra Vision Leica Quad setup that offers a "DSLR-level experience," with a 50-megapixel sensor, a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and an 8-megapixel "SuperZoom" camera with 10x optical zoom. The camera module has been housed in the "thickest" part of the phone. However, despite the tapered design, the device folds evenly left and right, so the whole thing is unnoticeable when closed. The Mate X2 is powered by the Kirin 9000 5G chip that debuted in Huawei's Mate 40 Pro last year. It's backed by 8GB of RAM and a 4,400mAh battery that can support up to 55W fast charging. The device also supports dual-SIM 4G/5G and comes with a leather case with a kickstand. The Mate X2 will be released in China on February 25th and is available with either 256GB or 512GB storage for ¥17,999 (around $2,785) or ¥18,999 (around $2,940) available.

There have been several rumors that Apple is researching foldable screen technology. In addition to various reports, registered patents have confirmed the whole thing. According to current information, Apple is working on an iPhone that uses a foldable OLED display that is said to come from Samsung. According to recent reports, two prototypes of different sizes have completed important durability tests. According to insiders, the results were positive for both devices.
