The second-generation AirPods were originally released in March 2019 and brought with them "Hey Siri" support and Qi wireless charging. The general design and form factor of the white earbuds has remained the same since their original release in December 2016, so a revamped design would certainly not be a surprise. Bloomberg reported in October that Apple plans to introduce new entry-level models with a shorter stem and replaceable ear tips, confirming Kuo's report that the design will be similar to the AirPods Pro.
AirPods 3: Price and release date
This means that the AirPods 3 would have an in-ear design instead of sitting on the ear like the current AirPods do. So although they could come in an in-ear design, they will not have the noise cancellation that is available in the Pro version. Is Apple updating the charging case?
In addition, it is reported that the charging case of the new Pro plugs will also be revised. The redesigned charging case of the AirPods Pro is rumored to remain 21 mm thick while being 46 mm high and 54 mm wide. For comparison: The current charging case of the AirPods Pro is 45.2 mm high and 60.6 mm wide. The case can currently be charged with Apple's MagSafe charger.
