Rumors about new AirPods models have been around for some time. This year, both the third generation of the normal AirPods and the second generation of the Pro version are expected to be released. We summarize all the rumors.
Various rumors suggest an update to the AirPods. Both the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 3 are expected to be released soon. But what new features could Apple's popular earbuds offer? Below is a summary of all the rumors.
AirPods 3 – All rumors at a glance
First and foremost, Apple is expected to introduce a new version of the entry-level AirPods in a completely new design. Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that the new third-generation AirPods will have a new form factor and design "similar to the AirPods Pro." However, Kuo did not provide any details. The second-generation AirPods were originally released in March 2019 and brought with them "Hey Siri" support and Qi wireless charging. The general design and form factor of the white earbuds has remained the same since their original release in December 2016, so a revamped design would certainly not be a surprise. Bloomberg reported in October that Apple plans to introduce new entry-level models with a shorter stem and replaceable ear tips, confirming Kuo's report that the design will be similar to the AirPods Pro.
AirPods 3: Price and release date
This means that the AirPods 3 would have an in-ear design instead of sitting on the ear like the current AirPods do. So although they could come in an in-ear design, they will not have the noise cancellation that is available in the Pro version. In terms of the release date, it has been reported several times that the AirPods 3 may be released in the first half of 2021. March is conceivable. In terms of price, the new plugs could be the same as the current model. This means that the version with a wireless charging case could cost around 229 euros, while the AirPods 3 with a normal charging case could cost 179 euros.
AirPods Pro 2 Rumors at a Glance
In addition to the third generation of the entry-level version, the second generation of the AirPods Pro is also due to be released. These are also expected to have a new design. Reports from Bloomberg suggest that the second generation of the AirPods Pro will have a more compact design that eliminates the short stem that protrudes from the bottom. The new Pro version of the plugs could have a rounded shape that is more similar to the earphones from companies like Google and Samsung. However, this innovation is not certain - according to the news site. According to reports, Apple is facing several challenges related to the internal workings. If this does not work out as planned, the AirPods Pro 2 could have a "less ambitious redesign".
Is Apple updating the charging case?
In addition, it is reported that the charging case of the new Pro plugs will also be revised. The redesigned charging case of the AirPods Pro is rumored to remain 21 mm thick while being 46 mm high and 54 mm wide. For comparison: The current charging case of the AirPods Pro is 45.2 mm high and 60.6 mm wide. The case can currently be charged with Apple's MagSafe charger. However, a revised case could improve compatibility. Accordingly, the change in the charging case may not necessarily be related to a redesign of the plugs themselves.
AirPods 3 & AirPods Pro 2: Will there be new features?
In terms of price, the AirPods Pro 2 are expected to be positioned in the same price segment as their predecessors. That is, the new Pro plugs could cost at least 279 euros. Regarding the release date, there are various reports. Some believe that the new audio accessories will be released in the first half of the year, while others are predicting autumn. Interestingly, none of the countless reports mention the range of functions. This means that we do not yet know whether the AirPods 3 or AirPods Pro 2 will have new features. So the whole thing remains exciting as always. (Photo by Masarik / Bigstockphoto)
