When Apple introduced the new Mac operating system macOS 11 Big Sur at WWDC 2020, fans were amazed. There are many small animations that make macOS Big Sur so special.
Apple has big plans for macOS Big Sur. The new design is not only refreshing but also groundbreaking. It brings macOS closer to iOS and iPadOS. Safari has also undergone a major update. This is particularly to the delight of streaming fans. The new version of Safari supports HDR videos for the first time. Now Twitter user Ishan Agarwal found outthat Netflix is one of the beneficiaries. Apparently, Mac users on macOS Big Sur can now finally stream Netflix content in 4K. The streaming service has been offering 4K content for a long time, but Mac users have not been able to access it due to hardware limitations, as the platform is based on the HEVC codec.
The Mac devices support 4K streaming with high dynamic range
But even since Apple released Mac models with full HEVC support, 4K streaming was not supported because Safari was not updated accordingly. Users had to make do with 1080p resolution. This is now changing with macOS 11 Big Sur. This means that under the new Mac operating system users can watch content in 4K resolution. Dolby Vision and HDR10 are also supported. But there is a catch. 4K streaming with high dynamic range requires a Mac that was introduced in 2018 or later - according to Apple. Accordingly, older devices will only support 1080p under macOS 11 Big Sur. In addition to the innovation for Macs, Apple has also activated the VP9 codec for applications under iOS 14 and tvOS 14, which allows users to watch 4K HDR videos on YouTube for the first time.
