Apple will officially open WWDC 2020 tomorrow with a keynote. In addition to software, the first ARM chip will also be unveiled. Now there is a report that sheds light on Apple's plans for the 2020 iMac and more.
The well-known and accurate Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has published a new note to investors today, in which Apple's plans regarding ARM-based Macs are highlighted. According to this, Apple is indeed planning to launch the first ARM chip tomorrow evening. revealKuo thus confirms an earlier report from Bloomberg. In addition, Apple's schedule for the introduction of the ARM Macs is now set. This means that a MacBook Pro 13" with an ARM chip will be introduced first, followed by an iMac with a brand new design. The devices could go on sale in late 2020 or early 2021. The note states:
ARM 13.3-inch MacBook Pro: The form factor of the new model will be similar to that of the existing Intel 13.3-inch MacBook Pro. Apple will discontinue production of the Intel 13.3-inch MacBook Pro after the launch of the ARM 13.3-inch MacBook Pro.
ARM iMac: The ARM iMac will feature the all-new form factor design and a 24-inch screen. Apple will introduce the refresh of the existing Intel iMac in 3Q20, before the ARM iMac launches.
MacBook: MiniLED and new design
According to this, the introduction of the ARM MacBook Pro 13" will mean the end of the Intel version. In the iMac range, a 24" device is to be expected. But before the ARM model appears, Apple is planning a final update of the Intel version. This is planned for the third quarter. Rumors currently suggest that the device could be unveiled as part of WWDC 2020. Finally, Kuo explained that all Mac models will be switched to ARM from 2021 - it could take a total of 18 months until the entire Mac range runs on ARM. In addition, Apple's roadmap calls for the introduction of a MacBook model with a miniLED display in the first half of 2021, while a MacBook with a brand new design is to be released in the second half of 2021. As always, it remains to be seen whether the analyst will be right with his forecast. However, given his excellent hit rate so far, there is no doubt about it at the moment.
